The first event that took place on the 15th May 2017 was a netball fixture against Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowyr who are going to represent South Powys in the Netball Wales National Finals on Thursday 25th May 2017 in Cardiff. The idea of this fixture was that Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowyr could play a competitive game before the finals and also receive some extra coaching from Miss Millar, a former PE teacher at Ysgol Maesydderwen and current netball coach at Ystradgynlais Netball Club. Ysgol Maesydderwen put together a Year 7 squad to play the fixture. There was no score kept during the game but it was played to a very high standard and all pupils enjoyed. Parents from both teams attended to support the pupils and were encouraged by the links between the schools. Mr Roberts (DyG PE teacher) has requested that more fixtures be played between Ysgol Maesydderwen Year 7’s and the local schools.
The second event that took place on the 16th May 2017 was a Year 3 and 4 Cluster Indoor Football Tournament. It was a 6-a-side festival with 10 in a squad. Every cluster school took part in the event. No results were recorded as they were just friendly fixtures. This is the third event across the year that has taken place for football for Years 3 and 4. Ysgol Maesydderwen pupil Jordon Hickey and former pupil and Freedom Leisure employee Jack Donnelly refereed the games. Over 50 kids took part in the event (girls and boys) and the hall was full of parents watching the games. Thank you to the volunteers that also helped coach the primary school teams.
The final event of the week was the Swansea Valley 7’s Competition which was played on Ysgol Maesydderwen playing fields. This is the third event to be run in conjunction with the Swansea Valley Rugby Committee. Previously hosted events were the Swansea Valley 7s in September and the Swansea Valley 10s after Christmas. This event was open to any primary school within the Swansea Valley. The Ystradgynlais Cluster teams, however, always have all four schools taking part in each of the events. The WRU also linked with the event sending Iwan Evans, former pupil and Young Ambassador of Ysgol Maesydderwen, to referee and support the event. It was a round robin competition with five teams entered into the event. The eventual winners were Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowyr.
