In the Glorious sunshine yesterday, Ysgol Maesydderwen's PTA hosted a Rugby 7's and Netball Tournament for the four cluster primaries. The Rugby 7's took place on the back fields while the netball took place on the two netball courts at the back of the school.
Darren Jones, Ysgol Maesydderwen's Head of PE and Stephan Thomas a volunteer ran the rugby 7's. Four teams had originally entered the 7's competition but due to illnesses within the team Ysgol Golwg y Cwm had to withdraw. The competition was played in a round robin type tournament and then then the top two teams played in final. The eventual winner of the Rugby's 7's competition was Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowyr.
Jan Millar, a former PE teacher at Ysgol Maesydderwen, Fran Thomas, our current PE teacher at Ysgol Maesydderwen and Linda Daniels from Ystradagynlais Netball Club volunteered to run the Netball competition. Five teams took part with two entered from Ysgol Bro Tawe. Ysgol Golwg y Cwm and Ysgol Cribarth earlier on the in the term decide to do their netball training together so entered two mixed teams for the tournament. Again this was a round robin style tournament with the eventual winner being Ysgol Bro Tawe's 1st team.
Hannah Barron and Harrison Clayton from the 5x60 ambassador scheme at Ysgol Maesydderwen also made an appearance on the evening helping with the set up timing of the games.
Both competitions where played to a very high standard with all teams that entered having very talented young athletes. The Ystradgynlais area has performed strongly in all aspects of sports across this year and the talent and great standard of young sports men and woman was shown in the competitions.
The PTA also put on refreshments which proved a huge success as it was a warm day!
A big thank you to all who took part, the parents who attended and to everyone that helped with the set up of the event.
I think we can say it was a huge success and we are all looking forward to next years event!
