The second of our “PSE Days” at Maesydderwen was again a success. During the day all pupils from years 7-10 were involved in a collapsed time table of PSE activities as outlined in the PSE Framework.
Year 7 were involved in a project on Hedgerows ran by “Keep Wales Tidy”. They spent the day planting new hedges and researching the type of hedging in the immediate vicinity. They also learned the importance of maintaining the hedging to wildlife.
Year 8 had a day based on making “Healthy Choices” which involved emotional and mental health as well as physical good health. They had sessions on “resilience” which were run by Powys Health Board. The locally based MEND group took sessions on maintaining physical well-being which was continued by the staff in school. Healthy Eating and Food choice was to be taken by “Taste buddies” who were unfortunately unable to attend and were ably substituted by Mrs Faye Broderick.
Year 9 theme was “Citizenship” and they had various speakers to deliver aspects of this topic-Magistrates, Outreach speaker from the Welsh Government, Aberystwyth University and Careers.
Year 10 had a “Substance Misuse Day” based on the dangers of smoking, legal and illegal drug taking and alcohol. These sessions were delivered by members of CAIS, science staff at school and PC Eckley who is a regular contributor to our PSE lessons, unfortunately Teenage Cancer Trust were unable to attend but will be attending in the near future. There was also a follow up session to research the topics covered to ensure that pupils are aware of where to get help if needed.
