The History Club organised a visit to France and Belgium to commemorate the hundred year anniversary of the outbreak of World War1. We visited the Western front including the Somme, Mametz and the Menin Gate in Ypres. We had the benefit of a guide throughout our tour. Major Bob Darby, an expert on the war, was able to explain many details about the battles and this helped to bring the history to life. We also visited the grave and memorial of Hedd Wyn, the Welsh poet who was killed in action and was awarded the chair at the national eisteddfod posthumously.
Poppy wreaths from the school were laid at the Menin gate and at the new Welsh memorial in Mametz Wood to remember the fallen from our local community.
