Girls Rugby
Ysgol Maesydderwen has formed a partnership with the WRU and local Rugby Coach Darren Carew. Darren has been coming into Ysgol Maesydderwen continuously every Thursday to help promote and coach Girls Rugby for all year groups. There are currently between 8-12 girls that attend regularly. We as a school are proud to have formed a partnership with the local rugby club and WRU to help increase girls participation. It is also a credit to have the support of teachers such as History teacher Mrs Davies who is a keen rugby player and fan.

Hockey
Ysgol Maesydderwen has been working with Hockey Wales over the past year on trying to increase participation in Hockey within the school and Community. Jan Millar former PE teacher and now Cover Supervisor for the school has been delivering Hockey sessions on a Wednesday after school and had come up with the idea of running a 10 week Hockey league which ran on a Tuesday and Friday Lunch. 9 teams entered the league which was open to boys and girls. To finish the league off Ysgol Maesydderwen entered a boys and girls team into the annual 5x60 hockey festival held at Gwernyfed High School. The girl’s team finished 3rd and undefeated out of 8 whilst the boys finished 3rd out of 5.

The score with Cefn Saeson was 3-3 and the score against Brecon was 7-0 to Ysgol Maesydderwen.

Ysgol Maesydderwen is very proud to announce that two more Silver Ambassadors have been selected. These are Anya Welch and Harrison Clayton who are both currently year 10 students. Harrison and Anya are very well respected students amongst teachers and fellow pupils. They are true ambassadors of sport within the school giving up their own to help run 5x60 events. They have recently just been on there Silver Ambassador Training Day and are ready to lead by example. Nia McLennan our Gold Ambassador had to deliver part of the silver ambassador training day.

Ysgol Maesydderwen is proud to say that Hannah Barron, a Year 10 pupil and current Silver Ambassador has been shortlisted for Young Volunteer of the year. Hannah has contributed hours of her own time to help out with 5x60 events and also given time to help with her local community sports clubs such as Cwmtawe Ladies Hockey Club and Ystradgynlais Netball club. Jan Millar former PE teacher and Ysgol Maesydderwen’s current cover supervisor has been nominated for Outstanding service to PE and School Sports. Jan Millar is a major part in the success of sports within the school and also in the community.

Swansea Inclusive Sports Regional Camp
Ysgol Maesydderwen’s SEN unit took 8 pupils up to Llandarcy Sports Centre to take part in Swansea Inclusive Sports Regional Camp. The event was open to all schools in Swansea and due to a close working partnership between Nathan Jones the Inclusive Futures Officer and the school, the SEN unit were invited to take part. The pupils took part in a variety of events such as Athletics, Rugby and Wheelchair basketball. Ysgol Maesydderwen believes in Inclusivity and that everyone can take part and have the same opportunities. This event was a follow on from the confidence building day we hosted for the local primary schools.
