Last week, at a meeting of the cabinet, the decision was taken to agree the revised proposal for modernisation of secondary education across Powys.
For Ysgol Maesydderwen this will mean:
· That 11 – 16 education will continue at Ysgol Maesydderwen. As part of the new structure we have been grouped with three other schools as a ‘family’. We will be establishing much closer links with these schools as part of the new arrangements, but Ysgol Maesydderwen will remain as a separate school with its own identity. To help facilitate this joint working there will be additional governance arrangements.
· Arrangement for Welsh Medium education for pupils in the Ysgol Maesydderwen catchment will continue to be provided at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera.
· Post-16 education will continue at Ysgol Maesydderwen and we will be continuing to collaborate with other schools in the South to ensure we can provide a broad range of options. It is planned to set up a new Commissioning Body within Powys that will run post-16 education and co-ordinate provision across the schools and college sites.
We have already started to work with our new school family, which links us with Brecon High, Crickhowell and Gwernyfed and we are pleased to be retaining our 6th form which adds so much to the life and work of the school. I would like to thank those of you who made your voices heard on our behalf!
Last week, you will have received a copy of ‘Feedback’ which is the Annual Governors’ Report to Parents. I would like to draw your attention to the date and time of the AGM which is scheduled for 6th December at 6:30pm in the school canteen. The purpose of the meeting is to focus on the work of the Governing Body and the school during the 2010 – 11 academic year. However, we also intend to open the meeting for a discussion of the modernisation proposals and provide an update on the progress of the new build. Please come along if you would like to take part.

There is currently a vacancy on the school governing body. Nomination forms were given to pupils to take home on Monday, 28th November. If your child was not in school, they can collect a letter from the main office. The closing date for nominations is Monday, 5th December at 4pm.
October 2011
Due to ongoing road works outside the school's main enterance, there has been a significant increase in traffic congestion at peak times. In the interests of safety, the school's main entrance is closed to all traffic except school buses between 8:15-9:00 and 3:00-3:30 until further notice. Parents driving their children to school are advised to use the Leisure Centre entrance.

The school has joined an online fundraising network. By carrying out internet searches at ysgolmaesydderwen.easysearch.org.uk, you can raise money for the school. Searching is free and the results are provided by leading search engines such as yahoo and bing. If all pupils, parents and staff completed just one search a day, the school would raise £2,500 a year! While you're online, please try this out.
If you register as a supporter at easyfundraising.org.uk, you can also raise funds for the school if you do any shopping online. All of the major retailers are included in the scheme (including Tesco, Argos, Amazon and e-bay). There are also discount codes available and ways to raise funds without buying anything. We'd appreciate it if you could take a look at the site and register your support for us.
