French

The department is staffed by language specialists committed to making the learning of a foreign language an enjoyable and practical experience. We aim to give all students the opportunity to study at least one language regardless of their ability, providing a caring, supportive and striving environment in the whole school ethos of achievement for all. We believe that the learning of a foreign language is a vital contributor to a broad, balanced and enriching curriculum for all students.

OUTLINE OF COURSES

Key Stage 3

The school has a 3 or 4 form entry. French is taught to all pupils across the ability range and including ALN pupils. They have 4 lessons per fortnight and follow the Metro Course Book.

In year 7 pupils develop oracy, reading and writing skills in French using themes which are of interest to them: self, family and pets, school and leisure. Pupils are assessed in all four skill areas: listening and responding 25%, speaking 25%, reading and responding 25%, and writing 25%. Assessment is based on pupil’s performance in end of module tests each term and, internally set, end of year exams.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 French is an optional subject. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to opt for French. Those pupils choosing to take up this option will have 5 lessons per fortnight. They will have access, during one of these lessons, to the foreign language assistant. They will follow the Metro Course Book and be entered for the WJEC GCSE Examination at the end of year 11.

VISITS and EVENTS

It is desirable that as many pupils as possible have contact with France and the French in order to put their knowledge to practical use. To this end, we have taken part in exchange visits to Locminé in Brittany. These visits have proved to be a great success and the value of experiencing real French in the country where it is spoken cannot be underestimated.

The Annual French Breakfast is also a very popular event. Usually held at the end of the Christmas Term, staff and pupils are invited to join us in the department for coffee and croissant, and relax in the ambiance of a French Café.
