5x60 Review 2010/11
5x60 this year has had another successful year with the highlight being with the year 10 rugby league team winning the school’s first ever welsh cup by beating Monmouth school 42-36 in thrilling encounter and Martyn Davies picking up man of the match award. Another success story that followed the boys was there progression in the Carnegie Schools Rugby League British Cup by progressing to the quarter finals where they narrowly missed out 26-22 to a vastly experienced Sirius Academy(Hull) who are Yorkshire champions and have recently progress to the British cup final which is held in Wembley stadium. So a massive well done to the boys on their great adventure this year.
During the year as well as rugby league fixtures there have been a number of competitions taking place, with key stage 3 boy’s badminton team becoming runners up in the south Powys championships and girls putting in great display but failed to reach the final. Girls football teams entered the Swansea valley 5x60 cup which was eventually won by Cwmtawe, South Powys Championships and the annual Urdd football completion.
Maesydderwen took part in the first ever South Powys dance showcase, where all schools in south Powys had the chance to show off their dancing abilities. Maesydderwen who showcased a group of talented dancers and Molly Carr who was the only solo dancer who took part in the wonderful night which was held in Brecon. A big thank you goes out to all the girls for there time and effort into practicing and special thanks goes to Molly Carr for choreographing the dance.
Maes also competed in the Swansea valley Olympics where a group of ten pupils competed in a variety of events against the local secondary schools. This was a great event especially the first of its kind and will be running every year.
Lunchtime clubs have been another great success this year with clubs like Dodgeball and Gaelic Football becoming an instant hit with the pupils.
As well as providing extra curricula opportunities for students the 5x60 scheme gives pupils/staff the opportunity for gain various coaching experience and qualifications with students taking part in tag rugby leaders award and badminton leaders. So a massive thank you for all the 6 form helpers and the staff that have made the 5x60 project a part of successful school year.
